vlag, stok, boem (translation: flag, pole, boom)is an installation made for the exhibition ‘Don’t Mention The War’ in Harelbeke, Belgium. For this project we worked with teachers and students from the 5th grade in various schools in and around Harelbeke. We made them research the local civil victims of the first world war and discover through art-exercises the colors and symbols of different flags. Out of all this material we let the students filter words, colors and shapes for one specific victim. Together, we then made flags remembering the lives of these civil casualties. We then finished the flags and built the actual installation. The bright colors of the flags contrast with their meaning, and the frailty of the flagpoles is reminiscent of the frailty of peace. In a short ceremony the students inaugurated the new, temporary monument.
